February has been a busy month for the studio. As a result I missed a few of my dear friends’ birthdays. With Paola in L.A. and Seth in Providence I couldn’t be there to celebrate their special days. So I decided to send them a birthday party in a box!

Inspired by book boxes seen at a local craft store I went to the library and bought two old books to alter for the project. A red book was perfect for my friend Paola because of the adorable little illustration on the cover. I chose a more masculine black cover hardback book for Seth.

To start, I applied glue around the edges of the book pages to keep them together and form a block. Then, with an X-Acto knife, I cut out a large rectangle through all the pages to create the hollow hiding space. Completing the construction, I applied additional glue to the opening’s inner edges to further secure the pages. To create the party, I filled the books with little fun goodies: homemade confetti, candy sweets, a birthday candle, a small toy animal, a birthday flag and a hand-written note.

These festive books are so much fun to design and they make great gifts. Open one up and find a party! I’m looking forward to making more of these in the future. I’m currently searching for fun surprises to put inside. Have any good ideas?

Just love this idea. Had a go at making my own (how hard is it cutting out the inside of the book, might need to get myself a better blade). Decorated the front cover and made a box to fit on the inside. Thanks for the great idea :) .
