Back in December WE was commissioned to design a chandelier for Dancefx dance studios in Athens, Georgia. The store manager instructed us to steer far away from the typical candelabra style and to create an eye-catching centerpiece that could light up the vast studio where it would hang.
When approaching the piece Laura and I pored over many ideas. During our brainstorming process we looked into using mirrors, painted glass, old-fashioned Edison lightbulbs and even explored the workings of fiber optic to generate starry sparkles of color. After spending some time floating around the realm of infinite possibilities we reeled ourselves in and made some practical decisions but never lost sight of creating an elegant design solution.
The end result is a hand-crafted light fixture comprised of twelve wide mouth Mason jars lit from within by compact fluorescent bulbs. The design is a reflection of old-school Southern hospitality repositioned in a contemporary artistic framework. Using Mason canning jars evokes an image of rural bucolic life while the emitted electric light firmly fixes the piece au courant. A combination of medium and large jars, frosted and clear, add interest and variety to the composition.
More than just a pretty sculpture this chandelier puts out the equivalent of 480 watts of light while using only 108 watts of power. Lots of time to shine without spending so many dimes.
Having had so much fun designing and building this chandelier WE Design Studios is now offering them at the Etsy store the WE Store. It takes about a couple of weeks to make one so please be patient while WE hand-makes your masterpiece.
